Class: Grade 7, General Science
Unit: From Cell to Organs

Title: The Neuron

  • Before this lesson is implemented all individual education plans will be reviewed and appropriate accommodations and/ or modifications will be made to attend to students' needs.

Instructional Objectives:
  1. Students will describe the topic being learned through labeling and coloring a a Neuron.
  2. Students will exhibit participatory behavior during class discussion.
  3. Students will apply the concepts of what a Neuron does and how it can affected when reflecting about their own lives.
  4. Students will pose questions pertaining to class discussion.

Activities and Assignments:
  • 15 Minutes- Take attendance. Ask students to take their cell drawings that they researched for homework and add them to the real life sized human outline. Explain that we have gone over how cells begin their journey as one cell that becomes differentiated to form tissue which in turn creates complex organs that together as a whole benefit the entire body of any living organism.
  • 15 Minutes- Begin the new topic by asking "Have you ever wondered why and how when you fall or cut yourself you feel immediate pain? I mean, it seems the pain happens before you're done accidentally hurting yourself. It's such a swift process." Introduce that we are going to begin our next topic, a more specific lesson based upon the cells which make up the nervous system. Neurons.
  • 20 Minutes-Pass out to begin learning about the different parts of this particular cell. This will be conducted in the way of teacher labeling and coloring an overhead of the exact diagram and explaining each structure of the Neuron.
  • 15 Minutes- After labeling and coloring I will conduct a class wide discussion about what they think the Neuron's function is. I will hint that it is the core component in the Brain, Spinal Cord and Peripheral nerves which make up the Nervous system. After taking some answers I will explain that Neurons are electrically excitable cells in the Nervous system that process and transmit information.
  • 15 Minutes- Show Neuron video, suggest to students that they are responsible for taking notes on what they find of importance. After the movie, use formative assessment by discussing what they have learned about the movie. Ask what the kids found of interest, and what surprised them most.
  • 7 Minutes- Give homework assignment: Explain the directions and answer any questions.
  • 3 Minutes- Wrap up class and let students know that we will be working on a similar topic the following day. No homework is assigned.
